JCCC = Tobacco-Free

Smoke ’em if you got ’em

JCCC Tobacco-Free

Come August 1, 2011, JCCC will be a tobacco-free campus.

Well … almost.

Last night at its monthly meeting, the JCCC Board of Trustees approved a policy change reducing the 14 currently designated tobacco use areas down to 2. Trustees also approved a $10 ticketed fine for individuals violating the policy after having receiving one warning citation. The JCCC Police Department will be charged with enforcing the policy.

As with other fines, students with past due obligations may not enroll for or drop courses or request transcripts until those obligations have been resolved.

Johnson County Community College joins the Metropolitan Community College system in becoming a tobacco-free campus on Aug. 1.

From the Trustee Summary report:

Tobacco-free campus

On Aug. 1, 2011, Johnson County Community College will become a tobacco-free campus, with smoking permitted only in an individual’s car in the parking lot and in the two smoking huts behind ITC. Beginning on that date, JCCC Police will issue tickets to people smoking on campus. (The first ticket will be a warning; subsequent tickets will cost the smoker $10 each.)

The college will offer smoking cessation classes on campus; classes are also available through the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Johnson County Health Department, Olathe Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center and Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Until Aug. 1, 2011, smokers may continue to smoke on campus in the designated smoking areas.
